One of the more ambitious mods coming to Half-Life 2 is one that will give it a VR mode. The team at Cabalistic unveiled the Half-Life 2 VR mode back in April this year, showing off 12 minutes of impressive footage of how the game will work. Now, a new trailer has been released, and while it only shows around a minute of gameplay footage, there’s a detail given right at the end that fans won’t want to miss.

That detail is that the beta for Half-Life 2’s VR mod will launch in September 2022. Anyone who would like to try the mod can do so with a SteamVR supported headset, and the team at Cabalistic have also tested it on the Index, Quest, Vive and Pimax VR hardware. This is exciting news for those eagerly anticipating being able to play Half-Life 2 in VR, as this mod not only gives the gamers a new way to play, but introduces a lot of novel gameplay aspects as well.

The Half-Life 2 VR mod has updated the game’s mechanics, allowing for players to dodge attacks physically and move into cover. Guns can be manually reloaded, too, and there are a lot of other new things the player can do thanks to the capabilities of VR. This can create interesting and sometimes goofy moments, as was shown in the 12 minutes of footage released in April when a user played tetherball with a corpse in the Half-Life 2’s spooky area of Ravenholm.

A VR mode isn’t the only big mod coming to the game. Even with Half-Life 2 being nearly twenty years old, plenty of modders are still releasing new content for the game fairly regularly. One ambitious Half-Life 2 mod puts players in the role of a combine soldier, for example, letting them play from the perspective of the game’s enemy faction. There are plenty more mods already available for Half-Life 2, and many players have stated that it is a title with some of the best mods in gaming.

Half-Life 2 released in 2004 and is available on Mobile, PC, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360.
