Laidlaw divulged as much during a recent interview with the outlet Arcade Attack, additionally stating that he had “no idea” if Half-Life 3 would ever be released to the droves of fans who want to see it come to fruition. While Valve could eventually end the nearly decade-long wait by completing the trilogy, Laidlaw proclaimed that he wouldn’t return to the company to work on the project even if it went back into active development.

“Unfortunately, I was not able to do that. But I never thought as far ahead as HL3, unless you were to say that HL3 and Episode 3 were the same thing. I will say that I expected every installment would end without resolution, forever and ever…”

Interestingly enough, even if Half-Life 3 did provide fans with a resolution to tie up all of the loose ends, Laidlaw went on to state that Gordon Freeman’s story would more than likely continue, as he would remain the series’ primary protagonist. Regarding the matter, the Half-Life series writer explained that at the end of the third sequel and each subsequent followup, Freeman would have possibly been put in an uncertain position, with the plot then continuing in succeeding entries ad infinitum.

Since Half-Life 3 remains in limbo without the slightest acknowledgement from Valve regarding the trilogy’s completion, the likelihood of fans getting the sequel anytime soon is low to nonexistent. Nevertheless, that doesn’t necessarily mean the franchise will always remain dormant, as Valve president Gabe Newell confirmed several months ago that he is open to developing a new IP set in the series’ universe.

Half-Life 3 has yet to be officially announced.
