The 2004 film Catwoman starring Berry is perhaps one of the most widely reviled pieces of cinema Momentarily putting aside how mean-spirited much of the criticism was and still is in hindsight, Catwoman quickly became a preferred target for many a critic both of the professional and armchair variety due to a number of rather creative decisions it made. But one idea that doesn’t get brought up enough is how Berry herself might do things differently if she had the chance.

Well, thanks to a recent interview discussing her directorial debut in the upcoming Netflix film Bruised, Berry got the chance to not only discuss a theoretical redo as an actress but also offer some ideas for if she got to direct a full reboot of the infamous Catwoman. While speaking with the YouTube channel Jake’s Takes, she quickly answered the question of which of her past projects she’d like to tackle as a director. “I would love to direct Catwoman,” she said with a laugh that didn’t diminish her sincerity. “If I can get a hold of that now, knowing what I know, having had this experience and reimagine that world the way I reimagined this story—Bruised was written for a white Irish catholic 25-year-old girl and I got to reimagine it—I wish I could go back and reimagine Catwoman and have a redo on that now knowing what I know.”

When asked to elaborate on what sorts of things she would change in a potential reboot, Berry answered as if she’d been thinking about this the whole time since that original film premiered. “I would have Catwoman saving the world like most male superheroes do and not just saving women from their faces cracking off,” she continued (in case anyone had forgotten just how surreal and mind-boggling that movie was). “I would make the stakes a lot higher and, I think, make it more inclusive of both men and women.” Now the idea of a new Catwoman movie where Berry actually has her own creative freedom really sounds like it could be something special, worthy of cleansing the audience’s palate nearly 20 years later.

It’s easy to forget especially after all this time, but 2004’s Catwoman was really one of the few instances in movie history where virtually everybody came together in agreement about a film. As confused as people were about Anne Hathaway playing Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, this was a whole different level. From the complete change to the character’s name and backstory to the baffling and meme-worthy basketball scene, it’s not difficult to see why critics and audiences alike panned this thing more aggressively than a starving prospector.

Still, Berry is widely considered the lone shining point in the movie. So if anybody deserves to have another shot at it, she does. Plus, now with her directing experience, she could have plenty more creative control, potentially making something that fans will flock to out of enjoyment rather than a desperation to find a funny movie to watch while drinking.

Catwoman is available to stream on HBO Max.
