Having 60 frames per second at all times is a feat in and of itself, but it’s something that the Microsoft-owned studio is so adamant about that it has opted to sacrifice the game’s look for continued flow. For those wondering, the team has accomplished this by implementing a “progressive resolution system” in Halo 5: Guardians.

Taking to Xbox Wire, the Executive Producer of the Halo series, Josh Holmes, gave gamers a brief look at the cinematic and story-telling aspects of the franchise’s forthcoming installment in a brand new trailer. In the process, Holmes also detailed the title’s new dynamic resolution feature, assuring fans that this was done to keep things running smoothly regardless of what the needs of a particular scene happen to be.

Sacrificing resolution in some in-game scenes and moments to maintain a smooth experience is evidently paramount, and Holmes makes a good case for implementing such a system. Admittedly, it may stand out as a poor choice if the resolution drops too low, but the team doesn’t sound like it’d be willing to drop the quality that low. Presumably, then, the development team would have had to tone down areas that have a little too much going on, if that were indeed the case.

Accompanying dynamic resolution is a slew of new features, most of which seem like genuinely positive additions for Halo 5: Guardians. While the lack of split-screen multiplayer is sure to disappoint fans of couch co-op, the more intimate narrative should rope players in, as the newest trailer seems to indicate. Even then, we can’t help but be a little conflicted about not being able to see Master Chief’s face in any fashion given the power of the story this time around – although that topic has fans on both sides of the fence.
