Team Doubles and Ranked Doubles have become staples in Halo multiplayer since their release due to their focus on cooperation between partners and highly competitive matches. Considering Halo Infinite has noticeably omitted many classic multiplayer game modes, it is refreshing to finally see the newest Halo title include a game mode that fans have been vying for. Ideally, the reintroduction of Team Doubles will pique the interest of seasoned Halo fans and newcomers alike, and be a more popular replacement to Last Spartan Standing.

The original setup for Halo multiplayer was relatively simple, which is why it has become one of the most iconic series in gaming. Game modes were either objective-based or traditional deathmatches that pitted two teams against each other. Even though Halo is not considered a tactical shooter, teams who could work together and coordinate their attacks would always outplay their opponents.

As the series grew more popular, the multiplayer became more and more competitive and players began looking for even more challenges. Many of the players flocked to free-for-all matches that eliminated the worry of having to deal with sub-par teammates while also adding more tension to the multiplayer by having every single player on the map fight one another. The issue with Halo’s free-for-all is the amount of chaos and disorder that came with the game mode. Instead of planned strategies and cooperation, matches were full of unorganized destruction with only the best of the best being able to come out victorious.

Halo’s answer to a more organized free-for-all match was Team Doubles, a multi-team match that could still incorporate the skill and cooperation found in traditional multiplayer while providing a sort of chaos similar to the free-for-all matches, but much more controlled and manageable. Players enjoy Team Doubles because it adds the extra element of multiple teams to the usual objective or slayer game modes and creates a highly competitive environment. Unlike free-for-all or other classic Halo team modes, Team Doubles requires players to not only play well on their own but also work together with their partner and coordinate their efforts to best the multiple enemy teams.

What Team Doubles Could Bring to Halo Infinite

Halo Ininfite’s biggest struggles as of late have been providing enough content to keep its fans happy and wanting to come back and continue playing the multiplayer. Given the game’s track record for uncertain release dates and less-than-ideal progression systems, fans have had every right to be frustrated with Halo Infinite and worry that it could be the decline of Halo’s famous multiplayer.

However, developer 343 Industries has been doing its best to keep fans informed about the status of the game and what the developers hope to bring to the multiplayer to appease its fans. Given the lackluster success of Last Spartan Standing, the developers decided to shelf the new mode for now and replace it with Team Doubles, a game mode that is proven to be popular within the Halo community. Since Team Doubles still incorporates free-for-all elements, it does feel like a fitting replacement for Last Spartan Standing, and one that still allows for fans to play on a team.

Hopefully, Team Doubles will bring back a sense of nostalgia for Halo Infinite players who feel as though the game is straying too far from the series’ roots. 343 Industries seems to be attempting to recapture the essence of the franchise by reincorporating classic game modes into Halo Infinite. Considering that both co-op and Forge have already faced uncertainties with their release windows, iconic game modes such as Team Doubles will hopefully be enough to satisfy players’ desire to play Halo Infinite cooperatively until the campaign co-op finally releases.

Halo Infinite is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
